A junk is a Chinese sailboat design dating from ancient times and still in use today. Junks were originally developed during the Han Dynasty (220 BC–200 AD) and were used as ocean going vessels as early as the 2nd century AD.
They were further evolved in the later dynasties, and were built and used throughout Asia for extensive ocean voyages. They were found, and in lesser numbers are still found, throughout South-East Asia and India, but primarily in China, perhaps today most famously in Hong Kong. Also, found more broadly, is a growing number of modern recreational junk-rigged sailboats.

Beagle travel to the origins

HMS Beagle was a Cherokee class 10-gun brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, named after the beagle, a breed of dog. She was launched on 11 May 1820 from the Woolwich Dockyard on the River Thames, at a cost of £7,803. In July of that year she took part in a fleet review celebrating the coronation of King George IV of the United Kingdom in which she was the first ship to sail under the new London Bridge. After that there was no immediate need for Beagle so she was kept in reserve for five years and "lay in ordinary", moored afloat but without masts or rigging. She was then adapted as a survey barque and took part in three expeditions. On the second survey voyage the young naturalist Charles Darwin was on board, and his work would eventually make the Beagle one of the most famous ships in history.

The state-of-the-art luxuries aboard the world's largest cruise ship

Currently under construction, these pictures offer a first glimpse of the luxury that awaits passengers on the world's largest cruise liner.

The Oasis of the Seas will be a state-of-the-art travelling city complete with a shopping mall, numerous bars and restaurants, and an outdoor amphitheatre the size of a football field with its own micro-climate and rock-climbing walls.

The 220,000 tonne behemoth - which will be 1,081ft long and tower 213ft above the water line - will have a staggering 16 passenger decks.

Hi-tech: A bar that moves between decks
She is currently being built at a cost of £610million in Aker Yards in Turku, Finland and is due to set sail next year.

Designed under the name Project Genesis, she was rechristened Oasis of the Seas last month, following a contest to name the ship.

The cruise liner is scheduled to hit the seas in late 2009, when she will operate Caribbean cruises out of Port Everglades in Florida.

Construction on a sister ship, Allure of the Seas, is due to begin shortly.

Μόνο για τα μουσεία αξίζει να αφιερώσετε τουλάχιστον δύο ημέρες: Ιστορικό Άμστερνταμ, Θαλάσσιας Ιστορίας, Αντίστασης, Νότιας Θάλασσας και το σπίτι της Άννας Φράνκ, Ρέικσμουζεουμ, με τη μεγαλύτερη συλλογή ολλανδικής τέχνης στον κόσμο, Βαν Γκογκ, Στεντελέικ και Ρέμπραντ, Θεατρικό, Κινηματογράφου, Τροπικών, Αεροπορίας, Γεωλογικό και Ζωολογικό.
Επιστροφή στο πλοίο για γεύμα . Το απόγευμα προαιρετική εκδρομή στους κήπους του Keukenhof. Επιστροφή στο πλοίο για δείπνο και χρόνος ελεύθερος για να γνωρίσετε την «Βενετία του Βορά». Επισκεφτείτε ακόμη την περιοχή του Μπλούμενγκραχτ με την ποικιλία αρχιτεκτονικής των κτιρίων, το Κάιζερσγκράχτ με τις 14 γέφυρες και την υπέροχη θέα και το μεγαλοπρεπές Χέρενγκραχτ.

3 ημέρα: AMSTERDAM- HIJMEGEN-KREFELD
Το πρόγευμα σερβίρεται καθώς πλέουμε προς το Nijmegen την πιο παλιά πόλη της Ολλανδίας, για να επισκεφτούμε το μουσείο Kroller Muller ένα από τα πλέον σύγχρονα μουσεία τέχνης και αρχιτεκτονικής που βρίσκεται στην καρδιά του Εθνικού Πάρκου του HauteVeluwe, και φιλοξενεί πίνακες του VanGogh, Picasso και άλλων ιμπρεσιονιστών ζωγράφων. Επιστροφή στο πλοίο για δείπνο και αναχώρηση για το Krefeld, περνώντας τις πόλεις Wesel και Duisburg.

4 ημέρα: KREFELD- COLOGNE- KOENIGSWINTER
Το πλοίο αναχωρεί στις 8.00πμ και το πρόγευμα σερβίρεται καθώς πλέουμε προς την Cologne. Περνάμε από τις πόλεις Düsseldorf, πρωτεύουσα της γερμανικής επαρχίας Βεστφαλίας και της μεσαιωνικής Zons. Γεύμα πριν την άφιξη μας στην Κολωνία στις 3.00μμ για ένα σταθμό 2 ωρών. Έχετε την δυνατότητα να κάνετε τα ψώνια σας στα καταστήματα ή να επισκεφτείτε τον Καθεδρικό Ναό, Ντομ (Dom) της Κολωνίας, που είναι το πιο διάσημο γοτθικό κτίριο στη Γερμανία. Ο θεμέλιος λίθος τέθηκε στις 15 Αυγούστου 1248, ενώ το πρεσβυτέριο εγκαινιάστηκε το 1322. Ο καθεδρικός χτίστηκε σταδιακά περίπου μέχρι το 1520. Παρέμεινε ημιτελής μέχρι τον 19ο αιώνα, όταν οι ρομαντικοί ενδιαφέρθηκαν πάλι γι' αυτόν. Τελικώς το 1880, έπειτα από 600 και πλέον χρόνια, ολοκληρώθηκε σύμφωνα με τα αυθεντικά γοτθικά σχέδια. Έχει ύψος 157 μέτρα και είναι η δεύτερη υψηλότερη εκκλησία της Γερμανίας μετά το ναό της ULM και η τρίτη υψηλότερη παγκοσμίως. Ανήκει δε στα μνημεία της Παγκόσμιας Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς της UNESCO. Επιστροφή στο πλοίο και αναχώρηση προς την Βόννη. Το δείπνο σερβίρεται πριν την άφιξη μας στην Koenigswinter.

5 ημέρα: KOENIGSWINTER-RUDESHEIM
Πρόγευμα καθώς πλέουμε στο ρομαντικό Ρήνο περνώντας από την πόλη Coblenz. Άφιξη στο Rudesheim, χαθείτε στα γραφικά πλακόστρωτα στενά της μεσαιωνικής αυτής πόλης. Χρόνος ελεύθερος για ψώνια.
Δείπνο στο πλοίο και το υπόλοιπο της ημέρας ελεύθερο.

6 ημέρα: RUDESHEIM- SPEYER ή MANNHEIM
Το πρόγευμα σερβίρεται καθώς πλέουμε προς στα ήσυχα νερά του Ρήνου προς την πόλη Speyer, περνώντας από τις πόλεις Wiesbaden, Nierstein,πριν να φτάσουμε στον προορισμό μας. Μετά το γεύμα προαιρετική εκδρομή στην Heidelberg. Επιστροφή στο πλοίο για δείπνο και διασκέδαση.

7 ημέρα: SPEYER ή MANHEIM- STRASBOURG
Πρόγευμα εν πλω για το Στρασβούργο. Γεύμα πριν την άφιξη στον προορισμό μας. Άφιξη μεταξύ 3.00-4.00μμ και αποβίβαση, άμεση μεταφορά στο αεροδρόμιο της Φρανκφούρτης για την πτήση της επιστροφής μας
