John F. Kennedy International Airport (IATA: JFK, ICAO: KJFK, FAA LID: JFK) is an international airport located in Queens County, New York in southeastern New York City about 12 miles (19 km) from Lower Manhattan. It is the top international air passenger gateway to theUnited States and is also the leading freight gateway to the country by value of shipments. The airport is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages the two other major airports in the New York metropolitan area, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia. JFK airport is the base of operations for JetBlue Airways and is also a major international gateway hub for Delta Air Lines and American Airlines. Ninety airlines operate out of JFK. The airport is named after John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States.

In popular culture

As one of the major international gateways in the United States, JFK possesses a high profile in popular culture. The British Invasion began with the arrival of The Beatles at JFK in 1964, who held their first American press conference at the airport.

Notorious B.I.G. references the airport's code name in the song "Going Back to Cali." The theme song of the 1960s comedy TV series Car 54, Where Are You? contained a line reading: "There's a scout troop short a child, [Nikita] Khrushchev's due at Idlewild," referencing the airport's previous name, Idlewild. In his one-man show Red diaper baby, Josh Kornbluth's eccentric communist father insists on referring to JFK as the "Bay of Pigs Memorial Airport". JFK is also mentioned in the U2 song, "Angel of Harlem", as well as the song "The City" by Joe Purdy. In the Simpsons episode $pringfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)" Mr. Burns builds the 'Spruce Moose' a parody of Howard Hughes's 'Spruce Goose' airplane, which he claims will fly from New York's Idlewild Airport to the Belgian Congo in seventeen minutes. A futuristic version of JFK was featured in The Fifth Element. In I Love Lucy, Lucy misses the USS Constitution bound for Europe and is forced to take a helicopter out of Idlewild Airport. Idlewild Airport was also mentioned in a "Twilight Zone" episode in which a plane en route to Idlewild travels through time.

Air Iceland, which is a part of Icelandair Group, is a dynamic company with firm roots that go back to the start of aviation in Iceland. Air Iceland is a flexible yet powerful airline servicing the West Nordic countries.

The head office of Air Iceland is located in the capital, Reykjavík, but the company's registered domicile is in Akureyri, the main town in north Iceland. Both Reykjavík Airport and Akureyri Airport serve as hubs for Air Iceland's route network.

Geneva

The area of the Geneva district is small : 282 km2 . It is a piece of enclosed land encircled by France.

It lies south of the Department of the Ain, and north of the Department of the Haute-Savoie. The frontier is 107.5 km long of which 103 is with France and only 4.5 with the Swiss Confederation.

The border with Switzerland is made up of a small area of land linking Geneva to the Canton of Vaud on the right bank of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman). T

wo little enclaves of Celigny in the Canton of Vaud belong to Geneva. Part of Lake Geneva is under the jurisdiction of the Geneva District and it represents 38 km2.

It is called the « Little lake ».

Η Γενεύη αποτελεί ένα από τα 26 καντόνια που σχηματίζουν την Ελβετία, αλλά έχει αυτονομία και δικό της σύνταγμα. Με σπουδαία οικονομική ανάπτυξη, αποτελεί πρότυπο για πολλές ευρωπαϊκές πόλεις, ενώ θεωρείται και ένα από τα σπουδαιότερα κέντρα εμπορίου.

Η Γενεύη κατάφερε να αποφύγει τους μεγάλους πολέμους που ισοπέδωσαν πολλές ευρωπαϊκές πόλεις, κρατώντας ουδέτερη στάση, προς μεγάλο όφελος του πολιτισμού της. Παλαιότερα υπήρξε ανεξάρτητη δημοκρατία, ενώ την περίοδο από το 1798 μέχρι το 1813, ήταν προσαρτημένη στη Γαλλία.

Με την Ελβετική ομοσπονδία ενώθηκε το 1815. Αν και έκλεισε την πόρτα στην Ενωμένη Ευρώπη, κρατώντας την ανεξαρτησία της και το δικό της ισχυρό νόμισμα (ελβετικό φράγκο), ωστόσο στη Γενεύη βρίσκονται περίπου 200 διεθνείς οργανισμοί, με σημαντικότερο τον Οργανισμό Ηνωμένων Εθνών, ο οποίος βρίσκεται στο Parc de l’ Ariana, στη δυτική πλευρά της πόλης.

Χαρακτηριστική είναι η σύγχυση που κάποιες φορές καταλαμβάνει τους τουρίστες σχετικά με τη γλώσσα, αφού στην πόλη ακούς το ίδιο άνετα τη γαλλική, που είναι η βασική γλώσσα, αλλά και την ιταλική και φυσικά τη γερμανική.

Η 50η ΕΠΕΤΕΙΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΠΡΩΤΗΣ ΥΠΕΡΑΤΛΑΝΤΙΚΗΣ

Η 4η Οκτωβρίου σηματοδότησε ένα ξεχωριστό γεγονός για τη British Airways: την 50ή επέτειο της πρώτης εμπορικής πτήσης αεριωθούμενου πάνω από τον Ατλαντικό.

Η πτήση από το Λονδίνο με προορισμό τη Νέα Υόρκη πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 4 Οκτωβρίου 1958 με το νεότευκτο αεριωθούμενο Comet 4 της BOAC, το οποίο συνέτριψε τον προηγούμενο χρόνο για τη συγκεκριμένη απόσταση, μειώνοντάς τον κατά 9 ώρες.

Μισόν αιώνα αργότερα, η British Airways ξαναζωντάνεψε τις μοναδικές αυτές στιγμές, έχοντας κοντά της έναν πολύ ξεχωριστό καλεσμένο: τον νεαρότερο επιβάτη της πρώτης πτήσης.

Ο κ. Brian Barnett, 72 χρονών πλέον, δήλωσε: «Είναι ιδιαίτερη τιμή να βρίσκομαι εδώ 50 χρόνια μετά την ημέρα που πέταξα με το γρηγορότερο και πολυτελέστερο, για την εποχή του, μέσο μεταφοράς».

Με κυβερνήτη τον Roy Millichap, το Comet 4 έφτασε στο αεροδρόμιο Idlewild της Νέας Υόρκης (το οποίο αργότερα μετονομάστηκε σε JFK) σε 10 ώρες και 13 λεπτά, με ταχύτητα 465 μιλίων ανά ώρα.

Ταυτόχρονα, ένα άλλο Comet 4 της BOAC με κυβερνήτη τον Tom Stoney αναχώρησε από το Idlewild με προορισμό το Αεροδρόμιο του Λονδίνου (το οποίο αργότερα μετονομάστηκε σε Heathrow), διανύοντας την απόσταση στο χρόνο-ρεκόρ των 6 ωρών και 11 λεπτών. Τα δύο αεροσκάφη διασταυρώθηκαν σε απόσταση 300 μιλίων και αντάλλαξαν μηνύματα καλής θέλησης και ευχές πάνω από τον Ατλαντικό.

To αεροσκάφος μετέφερε μόλις 32 επιβάτες, μεταξύ των οποίων δημοσιογράφους και τον Basil Smallpiece, Διευθύνοντα Σύμβουλο της BΟΑC, οι οποίοι απόλαυσαν την αξεπέραστη άνεση και πολυτέλεια, με τη βοήθεια του υπευθύνου καμπίνας και δύο αεροσυνοδών.

Για να αναπαραστήσουν την αυτή ιστορική πτήση, μέλη του πληρώματος της British Airways με στολές από την πτήση του 1958, σέρβιραν στους επιβάτες κοκτέιλ εμπνευσμένα από τη δεκαετία του 50, ενώ σε κάθε επιβάτη της επετειακής αυτής πτήσης δόθηκε ένα αναμνηστικό λεύκωμα.

Ο Martin Broughton, Πρόεδρος της British Airways, δήλωσε: «Πριν από πενήντα χρόνια ηγηθήκαμε της αεροπορικής βιομηχανίας πραγματοποιώντας την πρώτη εμπορική υπερατλαντική πτήση. Μετά από μισό αιώνα παραμένουμε πρωτοπόροι με την παροχή των καλύτερων υπηρεσιών και προϊόντων, προσφέροντας απαράμιλλη πολυτέλεια και άνεση στις υπερατλαντικές μας πτήσεις. Είμαστε πολύ ικανοποιημένοι που ο Brian Barnett ήταν μαζί μας σε αυτό το ταξίδι. Παράλληλα, θέλουμε να ευχαριστήσουμε όλους τους επιβάτες μας για την αφοσίωσή τους τα τελευταία 50 χρόνια».
