Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Here, great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert and created the world's largest gypsum dune field.
White Sands National Monument preserves a major portion of this unique dune field, along with the plants and animals that have successfully adapted to this constantly changing environment.

Το Αερόστατο είναι ένα πτητικό μέσο, (πτητική μηχανή), ελαφρύτερο από τον αέρα, που αιωρείται χάρη στην αεροστατική άνωση. Αποτελείται από δύο κύρια μέρη: τη λέμβο ή γόνδολα (που λέγεται και «καλάθι») και είναι ο χώρος όπου βρίσκονται οι επιβάτες - αεροναύτες ή/και τα όργανα και τυχόν άλλο φορτίο, και από ένα μεγάλο σάκο, (μπαλόνι), που ονομάζεται "αεροστατική σφαίρα" και γεμίζει με ζεστό αέρα ή κάποιο ελαφρύτερο του αέρα αέριο, (π.χ. υδρογόνο, ήλιο, φωταέριο κλπ). Η πρώτη πετυχημένη πτήση με αερόστατο έγινε από τους Αδελφούς Μονγκολφιέ, και η πρώτη επανδρωμένη από τους Φρανσουά Πιλάτρ ντε Ροζιέ και Φρανσουά Λωραίν στις 21 Νοεμβρίου 1783 στο Παρίσι, όπου και απετέλεσε το "γενέθλιο" της αεροπλοΐας ή αεροναυτιλίας.

The event is held in Memorial Park off Pikes Peak Avenue between Hancock Ave. and Union Blvd near the shores of Prospect Lake. Mass ascensions with over 100 balloons are scheduled for Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings with a Balloon Glo® scheduled for Saturday and Sunday evenings. Each year a variety of concessions are available and entertainment is provided during each event.
The Colorado Balloon Classic (a division of Colorado Springs Balloon Classic, Inc.) was organized in 1977 and has grown to be the largest and the longest continuously running hot air balloon festival in the Rocky Mountain Region as well as the State of Colorado. The Colorado Balloon Classic is an annual family event - admission is free - held each Labor Day weekend.
