The Milky Way over Greece, Aristarchos Telescope

The Milky Way over Aristarchos Telescope at the top of Chelmos Mountain in Achaia, Kalavryta, Greece, at an altitude of 2340m/7677ft. I took this shot in a moonless night (new moon) on July 18th, 2012, at midnight. The location has been measured as one of the darkest areas both in Greece and in Europe.

Karpathos Island Greece

Karpathos Island Greece, originally uploaded by Constadinos.

The island is located about 47 kilometers southwest of Rhodes, in the part of the Mediterranean which is called, after it, the Carpathian Sea (Latin: Carpathium Mare). The Sea of Crete, a sub-basin of the Mediterranean Sea, has its eastern limit defined by the island of Karpathos.
Karpathos' highest point is Mt. Lastos, at 1,215 metres (3,986 ft). Karpathos comprises 10 villages. All villages preserve intensively the traditional style of the island. In the southeast of the island you can find Pigadia (official name Karpathos), capital and main port of the island. The capital is surrounded by the villages of Menetes, Arkasa, Aperi, Volada, Othos, and Pyles. In the North one can find Mesochori, Spoa and Olymbos the last village in the North of the island, of great folkloric and architectural interest. There are two ports in the island; one is in the town of Karpathos and the other in the north of the island next to Olympos named Diafani.
The island Saria was united with Karpathos in the ancient times with an isthmus, but an earthquake divided them. Saria preserves many important antiquites, but they haven't been studied enough.

Heraion of Perachora Greece

Greece-046, originally uploaded by Pinox67.

The Heraion of Perachora (Greek: Ηραίο Περαχώρας) was a sanctuary of the goddess Hera situated in a small cove of the Corinthian gulf at the end of the Perachora peninsula. In addition to a temple of Hera of unusual construction and antiquity, the remains of a number of other structures have also been found, including a L-shaped stoa, a large cistern, dining rooms, and a second potential temple. The Sanctuary of Hera at Perchora is located 14.2 km NNW of Corinth, and 75.9 km W of Athens. Although there is debate between Argos, Megara and Corinth, the sanctuary was probably under the control of Corinth, as it faced the harbors of that powerful city across the Corinthian gulf. Cult activity at the site continued from perhaps the 9th century BCE to 146 BCE, when the Roman general Mummius sacked Corinth during the war with the Achaean League. In the Roman period, domestic structures were built on the site, indicating that the area was no longer a sanctuary. This site is significant for the study of the origins of Greek temple architecture and rural cults.

Prague dawn selfie

Prague dawn selfie, originally uploaded by alexring.

Prague (pron.: /ˈprɑːɡ/; Czech: Praha pronounced [ˈpraɦa] ( listen)) is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. It is the fourteenth-largest city in the European Union. It is also the historical capital of Bohemia proper. Situated in the north-west of the country on the Vltava river, the city is home to about 1.3 million people, while its larger urban zone is estimated to have a population of nearly 2 million. The city has a temperate oceanic climate, with warm summers and chilly winters.
Prague has been a political, cultural, and economic centre of central Europe with waxing and waning fortunes during its 1,100-year existence. Founded during the Romanesque and flourishing by the Gothic and Renaissance eras, Prague was not only the capital of the Czech state, but also the seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. It was an important city to the Habsburg Monarchy and its Austro-Hungarian Empire and after World War I became the capital of Czechoslovakia. The city played major roles in the Protestant Reformation, the Thirty Years' War, and in 20th-century history, during both World Wars and the post-war Communist era.
Prague is home to a number of famous cultural attractions, many of which survived the violence and destruction of 20th century Europe. Main attractions include the Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, the Jewish Quarter, the Lennon Wall, and Petřín hill. Since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
The city boasts more than ten major museums, along with numerous theatres, galleries, cinemas, and other historical exhibits. A modern public transportation system connects the city. Also, it is home to a wide range of public and private schools, including Charles University. Prague is classified as a Beta+ global city according to GaWC studies, comparable to Berlin, Rome, or Houston. Its rich history makes it a popular tourist destination, and the city receives more than 4.1 million international visitors annually, as of 2009. In 2011, Prague was the sixth-most-visited city in Europe.

Skånskt kaffe

Skånskt kaffe, originally uploaded by Håkan Dahlström.

Menetes Village Karpathos: Situated 8 kilometres south-west from Pigadia, Menetes is the cleanest village of Karpathos.

It little whitewashed houses with their yellow and blue shutters and doors are creating, with the narrow alleys and the flowered balconies and yards, a wonderful and attractive scenery.

Worth-seeing are the Church of the Assumption, the Byzantine Church of Agios Mamas and the archaeological collection of the village, exhibiting various findings from the surrounding area.
Accommodations, taverns and cafes are available in the village of Menetes.

Dadia Soufli, a set by dimsis on Flickr.

Dadia (Greek: Δαδιά) is a village in the northwestern part of the Evros Prefecture in Greece located south-southwest of Orestiada, southwest of Soufli north of Feres and northeast of Evros. Dadia is linked with the road connecting to the GR-51/E85 (Alexandroupoli - Soufli - Orestiada - Ormeni) to the east. Dadia is also in the municipality of Soufli. Its 2001 population was 800 for the village and 823 for the municipal district.

The name originates from a resinous pine wood which in the past was used for lighting.

The lighthouse is in the picturesque part of the waterfront and provides great opportunities for picture taking. Nevertheless, there isn't much to do at the lighthouse, and is really just a great way to enjoy the outdoors when in Alexandroupoli.

The Tholos @ Delphi #Greece, Mt. #Parnassus

DSC_8262 n, originally uploaded by melusinaelena.

The Tholos at the base of Mount Parnassus:
3 of 20 Doric columns.

The Tholos (Ancient Rome) at the sanctuary of Athena Pronoia is a circular building that was constructed between 380 and 360 BC. It consisted of 20 Doric columns arranged with an exterior diameter of 14.76 meters, with 10 Corinthian columns in the interior.
The Tholos is located approximately a half a mile (800 m) from the main ruins at Delphi. Three of the Doric columns have been restored, making it the most popular site at Delphi for tourists to take photographs.
Vitruvius (vii, introduction) notes Theodorus of Samos as the architect of the Round Building which is at Delphi.
